World Cup: Rohit Sharma picks up his first ODI World Cup wicket on a day Virat Kohli did the same | Cricket-world-cup News

2 min read

On a day India completed a hugely successful group stage campaign at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup with a comprehensive win against Netherlands, captain Rohit Sharma sealed the deal with a wicket in Bengaluru on Sunday.

Rohit has been turning his arm over at the nets and in pre-match warmups, and the match against Netherlands gave him the chance to add his name to the wicket-takers list. India used nine bowlers in the defence of 410 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium and the captain picked up the last wicket to fall. He dismissed Teja Nidamanuru, Netherlands’ top scorer on the night, as they were bowled out for 250.

Earlier in the day, Kohli had dismissed Dutch captain Scott Edwards. Both Kohli and Rohit picked up their first wickets at the ODI World Cup in the process, and this was also the first time in international cricket that the two star batters picked up a wicket each together.

Rohit, however, does have a track record as a bowler with his offspin. He bowled a lot more frequently earlier in his career and even has a hat-trick in the Indian Premier League from his Deccan Chargers days.

This was the first time he bowled in an ODI since 2016, though. Coming on to bowl in the 48th over, he was hit for a six by Teja who crossed his half century. Next ball, he flighted it up once more, slightly wider of the off stump and the attempted big hit was caught at long on.

Rohit, in the process, picked up his 12th international wicket and ninth in ODIs. He has picked up some big names in the past, including the likes of Michael Clarke, AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle.
