A 26-year-old man was run over by a train after a couple with whom he had an altercation pushed him off Sion railway station on August 11, said police.

The Dadar railway police on Tuesday arrested the accused couple, based in Mankhurd, for allegedly slapping and pushing the victim — Dinesh Rathod — on the railway track, leading to his death. Police said that the deceased had initially bumped into the woman accidentally at Sion railway station, following which the couple hit him and he fell on the railway track. Later, he was run over by a speeding train.

The accused couple has been identified as Avinash Mane (31) and Sheetal Mane (30), said police, adding that the incident took place at platform number 1 of Sion railway station at around 9.11 pm on August 13 when the couple was returning home.

“Rathod — who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol — had touched Sheetal, following which, she hit him with an umbrella. When Rathod abused Sheetal, Avinash — who was also present there — slapped Rathod,” said a police officer, adding that Rathod fell on the railway track as was standing along the edge of the platform.

According to police, the couple did not help Rathod in getting back on the platform despite knowing that he may get hit by a moving train and die. A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) — culpable homicide not amounting to murder and common intention — has been registered against the accused at the Dadar GRP.

“The identified the deceased was as Rathod, who was a resident of Ghansoli area, and started checking CCTV footage. The couple, from Kolhapur, was identified and traced to Mankhurd,” said another officer. The two accused confessed to the crime during interrogation at the Dadar GRP, and were subsequently arrested on Tuesday afternoon. They were produced before a court on Wednesday, and remanded to police custody, said officials.
