Telangana elections: Who is Revanth Reddy, among key architects of Congress performace in state | Political Pulse News

2 min read

From 19 seats in 2018 to comfortably leading in over 60 seats, the Congress turnaround in Telangana has been massive. Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Anumula Revanth Reddy, 56, who has emerged as the face of the party and has been aggressively taking on the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), occupies perhaps the biggest role in this arc.

This leap was hard to predict even after elections were announced in October. At the time, Revanth was having a difficult time keeping the Congress unit together with differences rising among various factions. Local leaders are said to have raised complaints against him for being “autocratic” and “promoting his own supporters”.

But Revanth has been hitting the ground running, addressing at least four rallies per day, and transforming himself to a state-level leader. He is also said to have established a good rapport with the top leadership, especially Rahul Gandhi.

But after the elections, some issues may crop up again. Factionalism is still rampant within the party; former TPCC chief N Uttam Kumar Reddy is also said to be in the race for the CM’s post.

On Saturday, when TPCC leaders went to Chief Electoral Officer Vikas Raj’s office to submit a complaint against BRS, it was Uttam Kumar who led the contingent. Revanth was in the background as Uttam Kumar said the Congress MLAs and the central leadership would together decide on the CM candidate.

Festive offer

His journey

Revanth started off with the ABVP. He moved to the TDP and won the Kodangal constituency in the 2009 and 2014 polls.

He had quit the TDP after his involvement in a bribing scandal had come to light. He joined the Congress only in October 2017 and lost Kodangal to the BRS in the 2018 polls. He, however, bounced back in just a few months, winning the Malkajgiri parliamentary constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Revanth is known to take on KCR and his family — son and minister K Tarakarama Rao; daughter K Kavitha; and nephew T Harish Rao — in public speeches and interviews. In 2020, he was arrested in Hyderabad in connection with ”illegal” use of a drone to take pictures of a building, which he has alleged belonged to a state minister and being built in violation of rules.

He was appointed the TPCC chief in June 2021. Since then, Revanth has been strengthening his image as a combative Opposition leader.

In a further boost to his profile, the Congress this time chose Revanth to take on BRS chief and Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao from Kamareddy – apart from repeating him in Kodangal.

His growing stature within the party, however, is said to have created differences with senior party leaders such as N Uttam Kumar Reddy, T Jayaprakash Reddy, V Hanumantha Rao, Madhu Yakshi Goud, M Shashidhar Reddy, and J Geetha Reddy, among others.
