Actors Sunny Deol and Akshay Kumar came out without a scratch when their films Gadar 2 and OMG 2 clashed at the box office recently, but the situation could’ve backfired on them both. Certainly, Sunny was aware of the potential disaster, and made an effort to avert it. On the second episode of Koffee with Karan season eight, the actor told host Karan Johar that he called Akshay up to request that he alter the release date of OMG 2, but Akshay said that it was out of his hands.

Karan praised Sunny for reviving the single screen marketplace with Gadar 2, which came over two decades after the first Gadar performed similar wonders in a pre-multiplex era. Asked if he contacted Akshay about the impending clash, Sunny said, “Obviously, I asked him. I said, ‘Please don’t do it if it’s in your hands’. But he said, ‘No, the studio and all…’”
Sunny said that he was told ‘two films can release’ simultaneously at the box office without affecting each other. “I said, ‘Okay, go ahead, I can just request, I can’t do anything more than that’.” Incidentally, the first Gadar clashed with Aamir Khan-starrer Lagaan back in 2001, and a similar story unfolded even back then. While Lagaan was the critical darling – it would go on to score an Oscar nomination as well – Gadar emerged as the bigger commercial hit of the two, ultimately finishing as the second-biggest Bollywood movie of the year at the worldwide box office, behind Karan’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.
While many films have succumbed to Bollywood box office clashes – most famously, Saawariya bombed while Om Shanti Om thrived in 2007 – as it turned out, both Gadar 2 and OMG 2 emerged as commercial winners. In fact, they helped their stars regain lost footing at the ticket windows, with Sunny not having delivered a hit in many years, and Akshay having starred in a series of high-profile flops in 2022. Gadar 2 grossed more than Rs 600 crore globally, and OMG 2 made over Rs 200 crore worldwide. Akshay appeared only in an extended cameo, however, and the movie was led by Pankaj Tripathi.
