Pune hospital airlifts lungs from Surat for transplant to save woman | Pune News
2 min readDPU Private Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, Pune, airlifted lungs from Surat to Pune via a charter air carrier to save a life. A green corridor was created from Civil Hospital, Surat, to the Surat airport, continuing from Pune airport to the hospital in Pimpri.
The organ recipient was a 53-year-old woman suffering from chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis due to exposure to pigeons. The patient was admitted to the ICU at DPU Private Super Specialty Hospital on September 20, 2023, for respiratory failure requiring non-invasive ventilatory support.
The condition of the patient was deteriorating, and she was on the list as a candidate for a bilateral lung transplant. On September 28, the hospital got a suitable organ donor alert from the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (ROTTO) and Maharashtra State OTTO through Pune ZTCC — a 42-year-old male from Surat Civil Hospital. Upon receiving the intimation, a team of doctors consisting of CVTS surgeons, transplant pulmonologists and other paramedical staff immediately left for Surat.
The organ was retrieved at 4 pm from Surat Civil Hospital and was transported within two hours and 15 minutes to the DPU hospital at around 6.15 pm. The success of this process was the persistent efforts of the entire team of doctors and healthcare staff of the hospital, an official statement issued Monday said.
The decision to transport the organ via air route by a charter air carrier was taken to avoid the delay that could lead to ischemic changes in the organ and worsen its condition. The green corridor was created with the support of the Surat and Pune traffic police departments. The organ was transported to Pune well in time on September 29 and the transplant took place on the same day. The patient will be tentatively discharged by the coming week.
Dr P D Patil, chancellor, Dr D Y Patil Vidyapeeth (deemed to be university), Pimpri, said: “A successful organ transplant surgery gives a new lease of life to people, and we are proud to make this a reality for innumerable patients.”
