MSEDCL detects power theft, illegal consumption of electricity to the tune of Rs 1.59 crore across the state | Pune News

The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) launched an anti-power theft campaign in Western Maharashtra, detecting power theft and illegal consumption of electricity to the tune of Rs 1.59 crore at 1276 places across the state on January 6. The special drive was undertaken by utility officials to reduce distribution and commercial losses.

Ankush Nale, Pune Regional Director (including Pune, Solapur, Satara, Kolhapur, and Sangli Districts), said that the campaign – which inspected electricity connections in the domestic, commercial, industrial and agricultural categories – started at 9 am and ran till late in the evening.

As per an official readout issued today, direct meter tampering to steal power worth Rs 96.58 lakh was detected at 869 places. Further, unauthorized consumption of electricity was detected across each district. These include 653 places in Pune district (power theft worth 1.21 crore), 151 places in Satara (Rs 12.34 lakh), 170 places in Solapur (Rs 8.29 lakh), 134 places in Kolhapur (Rs 7.3 lakh)and 168 places in Sangli district (Rs 9.61 lakh)

An official spokesperson with the MSEDCL said that fines and new electricity bills have been issued to the offenders. The official added that stern action under Section 135 of the Indian Electricity Act, including fines and imprisonment up to three years, will be taken if the bills are not cleared immediately.
