Is ‘skin slugging’ the secret to glowing, hydrated skin during winters? | Life-style News

3 min read

In the ever-evolving landscape of beauty and skincare, a new trend has emerged, promising to transform your skin into a dewy, radiant masterpiece. Enter the world of ‘skin slugging’ — a term that might sound strange at first but has gained a cult-like following among beauty enthusiasts seeking the next big thing.

Picture this: a glossy, shining face reminiscent of a slug’s trail, but without the slimy residue. That’s the visual allure of skin slugging — a skincare technique that involves slathering your face in a thick layer of occlusive moisturiser to create a barrier that seals in moisture.

So, what exactly is skin slugging and how can you do it?

The origin of the term ‘skin slugging’ remains a bit murky, but its rise in popularity can be traced back to a 2014 post on Reddit. According to Dr Asmita Dhekne Chebbi, dermatologist and cosmetologist, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Bangalore, skin slugging involves applying a heavy layer of moisturiser to the face, usually containing petroleum jelly or a similar barrier-protecting ingredient.

“To achieve the coveted slugging effect, start with a clean and hydrated face. Apply an emollient-rich or occlusive moisturiser evenly over your face in generous amounts. Proponents of skin slugging use this technique as the final step of their nighttime skin care routine, allowing the product to work its magic while you sleep,” she said.

What are its benefits?

As with any skincare trend, the efficacy of skin slugging varies from person to person. Here are some of its potential benefits, as per Dr Seema Oberoi Lall, Consultant-Dermatology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram:

Festive offer

*Hydrates dry skin: Slugging is effective in preventing trans epidermal water loss (TEWL), which is the process of water evaporating from the skin. This is especially beneficial for people with dry skin, ensuring hydration and suppleness.

*Improves skin texture: Slugging can also enhance skin texture, making it softer and smoother. This is because the occlusive moisturiser helps seal in moisture, leading to visibly radiant and plump skin.

*Protective factors: Slugging acts as a shield against environmental aggressors, such as pollution and harsh weather conditions. The occlusive moisturiser creates a barrier on the skin, safeguarding it from irritants.

*Heals damaged skin: Slugging can help heal damaged skin by creating a moist environment, allowing it to repair itself. This can be beneficial for people with conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

While the trend has its fair share of enthusiasts, some skincare experts urge caution. Dr Lall noted that this may not be suitable for everyone. “Individuals with acne-prone or oily skin may find that skin slugging exacerbates their condition. Occlusive products can trap oil and dirt on the skin, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Some people may experience skin irritation from slugging, especially if they have sensitive skin,” she explained.

It’s crucial to pay attention to your skin type and choose products accordingly. “Like any skincare trend, it’s wise to patch-test products and consult a dermatologist, especially for those with sensitive or problematic skin,” Dr Chebbi concluded.
