Digging up roads for amenities’ maintenance? Repair them yourself: PCMC to departments | Pune News

2 min read

To avoid causing inconvenience to citizens, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has directed all departments under it to repair roads that they dig up for maintenance of amenities and other reasons.

PCMC City Engineer Makrand Nikam said Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh has issued orders in this regard. In his order, the PCMC chief said his administration has taken a policy decision that departments which undertake various utility works and dig up roads should get the roads repaired by the same contractors. This should be done in coordination with the civil works department, Singh said in his order.

“The civil works department used to repair roads dug up for various civic services. After that the civil department had to carry out the repair work which resulted in delay and inconvenience to citizens,” Nikam told The Indian Express.

Nikam said the move was in the interest of citizens as well as PCMC. “Citizens will benefit as the delay in road repair will be avoided. The PCMC will gain as it does not have to initiate a process for getting the roads repaired. The new norm aims to ensure that roads in the city remain in good condition and they do not cause any inconvenience to citizens,” he said.

Civic body officials said the PCMC has collectively 1,375-kilometre roads under its jurisdiction. Throughout the year, various departments dig up roads for laying utility services. After which, their repair work is carried out. “This repair work takes time as it involves certain civic procedures like appointment of contractors to be followed. The delay irks citizens who complain of accidents due to the pathetic state of the roads. The road condition worsens during monsoon,” said an official.

Festive offer

Civic activist Rajendra Verma said, “Better late than never. The PCMC has finally realised the seriousness of dug-up roads. It is common in the city to see roads being frequently dug up for various works. Once the work is done, the repair work takes a long time causing hardship to citizens. Now hopefully the latest PCMC move of putting responsibility on the same department will speed up the road repair work”.
