Four students were killed and 20 others injured after a school bus collided with a tractor in Karnataka’s Bagalkot district on Sunday night, said the police. They added that the students were returning home after the annual day celebrations at the Vardhamana Mahavira school near Algur village.
The deceased were identified as Govind Jambagi, 13; Shweta Patil, 13; Sagar Kadakol, 17; and Basavaraj Kotagi, 17. The first two were Class 9 students, and the other two were pre-university students.
A police officer from the Jamkhandi rural police station said the accident occurred around 11.30 pm when the school bus driver tried to overtake a vehicle and hit the tractor loaded with sugarcane. The bus toppled and the students were taken to a hospital for treatment, the officer said.
“Prima facie, it has been discovered that the school bus driver was speeding and failed to notice the tractor as there were no lights. We have registered a case and probe underway,” a police officer said.
Jamakhandi MLA Jagadish Gudagunti and former MLA Anand Nyamagouda visited the hospital and consoled the bereaved families.
The accident came days after four people were killed in the Bilgi taluk of Bagalkot after their car rammed into a parked tractor early morning. The deceased were identified as Mallu Poojari, 25; Kallu Kavatagi, 35; Kamakshi Badigera, 30; and Tukaram Talewada, 30, who were residents of Honaganahalli in the Vijayapura district.
